The Town of Somerset embodies a sense of small town America that few communities in our area can rival. With its tight knit community and idyllic setting as well as its quaint town hall and elected mayor, Somerset feels like a throwback to another era. Town events include a 4th of July Celebration, Town pool events (including a dog swim), an annual Newcomer's Welcome Party, a road race benefiting Somerset Elementary and even quarterly brown bag lunches with town council members. While Somerset may have the vibe of small town, its location directly between and with incredible access to both Bethesda and Chevy Chase's commercial cores, makes it a perfect fit for residents who want charm without sacrificing proximity to urban amenities. This unique combination of attributes helps make Somerset one of the area's most sought after neighborhoods to live in.
According to the town history, Somerset was established in 1890 when a group of scientists bought 50 acres of tobacco farmland for residential development. The town went on to incorporate in 1906 in order to be able to control its own resident services, which still include trash and snow removal, maintaining its own tree canopy along with a community pool and tennis courts. The town is now home to 440 residences.
Thanks in part to its long history, the town enjoys a variety of architectural styles, including historic Victorians from the turn of the 20th century, split levels built in the 1960's and more contemporary styles thanks in part to the prevalence of tear downs in recent decades.
