Battery Park

Calling Battery Park Home

Battery Park shares an equally desirable location to Edgemoor, but homes in the Battery Park triangle tend to be smaller as they sit on smaller quarter acres lots. This helps give Battery Park a more down to earth feel than its tonier neighbor to the west, but make no mistake, homes in Battery Park are an equally hot commodity when they hit the market. Residents of Battery Park sometimes refer to the neighborhood as an "anti-suburb" thanks to its close proximity to Bethesda's urban core which has making it one of the most walkable neighborhoods in all of Bethesda. Battery Park also enjoys a rich civic life with community Easter Egg Hunts, July 4th & Halloween Parades, an annual Chicken & Rib Festival and more. The Battery Park Clubhouse is a fabulous community space that residents can enjoy or reserve for private events that includes a main house, tennis courts, a playground and patio.

History

Following WWI, four military officers formed the real estate development company Maddux, Marshall, Moss & Mallory. They went on to purchase a 54 acre farm between Wilson Lane and Old Georgetown Road and this area become known as the Battery Park subdivision in 1923. Battery Park was initially meant to be a restricted community for veterans only and the neighborhood's name came about as many of the original residents were members of the same artillery battery during the war. However, demand from the general public for the homes was so strong that the developers relented and opened up the neighborhood ot military and civilians alike. The Dutch Colonial style with its gambrel roof was the favored architectural style of the original homes built in the development and now the neighborhood of around 200 homes includes colonials, cape cods and bungalows as well.
