Woodhaven Real Estate

Calling Woodhaven Home

With no tear downs allowed in the original Tudor core of the neighborhood, rolling hills with seventy foot trees and streets named after American poets, Woodhaven stands out as a neighborhood that has retained much of its charm over the decades. While it disbanded it civic association years ago, the neighborhood remains close-knit with plenty of informal activities annually, including block parties, barbecues and holiday get togethers as well as a Christmas pageant that has been a neighborhood institution since 1948. The neighborhood hosts both Thomas W. Pyle Middle School and the Landon School, the private all-boys college preparatory school. Residents of Woodhaven enjoy relatively easy access to Downtown Bethesda and all it has to offer which is only two miles away.

History

Located within the triangle established by Woodhaven Boulevard, Wilson Lane and Bradley Boulevard about 2 miles from downtown Bethesda, Woodhaven was developed in 1936 by Phillip Dein with the intent of recreating an English Village. The original core of around 50 homes were constructed in the 1930's and 1940's along Woodhaven Boulevard in the Tudor revival style with additional homes built in the 1950's. Dein's vision included blending the homes in with the beauty of the landscape and its 60-70 foot tree canopy with no sidewalks or fences to interrupt the park-like feel of the neighborhood. While many neighborhoods in Bethesda were designed with a singular vision, very few have been able to maintain their original character thanks to the natural progression that occurs as developers slowly remake a neighborhood as the original residents depart. Woodhaven stands out as one of those exceptions as the neighborhood appealed to the Montgomery County Planning Board and Historic Preservation Commission in 2003 and was successful at banning tear downs among the original core of residences.

Architecture

The neighborhoods original 50 homes were constructed in the Tudor Revival style and largely remain intact. Outside of these homes, approximately 75-100 homes of varying styles exist from colonials, split levels and mid-century modern homes to newer construction homes built over the last 20 yrs.
