Sumner is known for its tight knit community and the natural beauty of the neighborhood's gentle hills and mature trees. The neighborhood's location just off Massachusetts Avenue and the Clara Barton Parkway/Canal Road makes commuting to the District, Northern Virginia and other parts of Maryland via I-495 & I-270 a breeze. Easy access to Little Fall Valley Stream Park, the Capitol Crescent Trail and the C & O Towpath provides residents of Sumner and Fort Sumner phenomenal recreational opportunities while The Shops at Sumner Place provide the neighborhood with restaurant, retail, services and grocery at their fingertips. The neighborhood also enjoys the distinction of being the closest Bethesda neighborhood to the District that feeds into popular Walt Whitman High School.
Sumner is a community of around 560 largely colonial homes that were built by W.C. & A.N Miller development company in the late 1940's. An additional 111 homes on the opposite side of Sangamore Road were developed on the actual site of Fort Sumner, a Civil War fort that was razed in 1956 to accommodate the neighborhood that now bears its name. These homes were constructed by 15 different builders leading to a more eclectic mix of architectural styles.
Sumner features mostly colonial homes while Fort Sumner contains a far broader mix of housing styles, including colonials, ranch/ramblers and split levels.
