Sumner is a community of around 560 largely colonial homes that were built by W.C. & A.N Miller development company in the late 1940's. An additional 111 homes on the opposite side of Sangamore Road were developed on the actual site of Fort Sumner, a Civil War fort that was razed in 1956 to accommodate the neighborhood that now bears its name. Sumner features mostly colonial homes while Fort Sumner contains a far broader mix of housing styles, including colonials, ranch/ramblers and split levels.
