Cabin John is known for its distinct low key vibe and tight knit community of residents from all walks of life, including artists, musicians, architects and others. Residents consistently site a love of the natural setting of the neighborhood as what drew them to the area. Its location on the Potomac River makes outdoor recreational activities part of the fabric of community life with an annual Chicken & Crab Feast that has been held since the 1970's as well as an annual canoe outing for residents that started two decades ago. While the neighborhood enjoys an enclave-like feel thanks in part to the one lane Cabin John Bridge used to access it, its location just off I-495, River Road and the Clara Barton Parkway provides incredible access to MD, DC and VA.
The history of Cabin John dates back to the Susquehannah Tribe and the early 17th century European Settlers, but its origin as a neighborhood dates back to 1912 when the American Land Company began subdividing lots mostly for "summer only" residences. Year round residents began to take hold, especially after the founding of the Cabin John Park Citizens's Association was formed in 1919 with the mission of developing both a sense of community and more modern amenities for the area. Cabin John is made up of an eclectic mix of smaller neighborhoods set on country-like lanes with a broad range of housing options, from mid-century modern detached homes to townhouse and apartment communities and even a cooperative detached housing project of 100 homes known as Cabin John Gardens.
The eclectic nature of the community extends to the architecture as no two homes in Cabin John are alike. Architectural styles include contemporaries, mid-century modern homes, cottages, bungalows as well as townhouse and apartment communities.
